We (continue) to build future leaders

Just like many other businesses and community programs, the pandemic could have negatively affected our youth programs. Yet with creativity and persistence, we managed to provide our Youth Tour and Youth Summit students with a valuable leadership experience, and the opportunity to participate in our 2021 trips.

Instead of touring historic sites this summer, our delegates joined 70 other students from across the state for the Virtual Youth Experience in June. Participants had the opportunity to ask government, education, and health officials about the historic issues facing their generation by way of video conferencing. The students also had the opportunity to earn a $5,000 scholarship by creating a podcast detailing how the COVID-19 crisis has impacted their lives.

We also chose three outstanding students for our Trustee and Touchstone Energy scholarships, and as usual, we had numerous applicants. We offer three $1,000 scholarships each year, and students are able to apply online in November at www.aikenco-op.org.

AEC knows our service territory is more than a collection of houses and businesses—we’re a community of people, and the strength of our future is in the hands of upcoming generations. Please know that your local cooperative cares and will continue to invest in the lives of each of the members we serve.
